Saunière's ex-libris and the magic gate

In the book "The sacred mountain", the reader can find on page 150 an ex-libris found in Bérenger Saunière's papers that had been exposed for a long time in the museum in Rennes le Chateau.

This set of symbols can also be found onthe the cover of Heinrich Madathanus's book "Aureum Seculum Redivivum" that was published in 1625. The author's true name was Adrian von Mynsicht and he was a german rosicrucian alchemist.

The same image can also be seen on the mysterious "magic gate"or "alchemist's gate" situated on the piazza Vittorio in Rome. The gate is "guarded" by two statues of egyptian god Bes. Astrological and cabalistic signs are sculpted on the gate's frame  which were probably linked to the XVIIth century Rosicrucian.

The story tells that Marquis Massimiliano Palombara (who was a friend of Christine of Sweden's) enjoyed the company of alchemists and astrologers. One day, a young alchemist, Giuseppe Francesco Borri, asked the marquis the permission to use his laboratory. He said that "the art of making gold was not impossible". Borri locked himself up in the laboratory a day and a night.
In the morning, the marquis had the door smashed in. Borri had fled by a window, only leaving behind him a crucible with a little solid gold inside and a few scrolls covered with strange symbols. The scrolls were studied but no one coud find out what they meant. Marquis Palombara had the symbols carved on the gate so that future alchemists could study them.
