On 21 September 1891, Bérenger Saunière, parish
priest of Rennes-le-Château, made a portentous discovery white
he was restoring St Magdalene's church: the family vault of the
Lords of Rennes.
For reasons still obscure, this vast tomb was
sealed up in the XVIIIth century on the orders of François d'Hautpoul,
lord of the manor.
Next to a crypt dating back to the VIth
century -perhaps one of the most ancient in France- this vault
could bouse the graves of the Barons Hautpoul since the XIVth
century and those of the Counts of Rhedae, descendants of
Guillaume de Gellone, since the IXth century.
Could this
ancestral sepulcher, excavated by Abbé Saunière and then
cleverly concealed underneath a deceptively extravagant décor,
hold the key to the mystery of Rennes-le-Château ?
This CD-Rom
presents a richly enhanced reworking of the lectures given by
Paul Saussez at Rennes-le -Château in 2002 and 2003. Without
claiming to report comprehensively on the "affair", it brings to
light many aspects that have until now been widely overlooked.
The essay is based on recognised sources only and avoids rash
speculation. More titan 100 animated screens retrace Saunière's
restoration work and the intriguing discoveries he made in
StMagdalene's church. Extensive 3D computer irnaging recreates
the church as it stood in the XVIIIth century and show how Abbé
Saunière had it cornpletely transfigured from 1887 to 1897.
